Reviewing Code in a PR
A real, separate PR from a teammate — reviewed with the same real commands any review UI is built on.
A real teammate, Grace Hopper, pushed a genuine new branch to the shared origin — a real PR waiting for review. Without a GitHub web UI, reviewing it means the same real commands GitHub's own "Files changed" and "Commits" tabs are rendering underneath: fetch, a three-dot diff, a real commit log.\n\nLeaving feedback means git notes — the real, git-native mechanism a review comment ultimately attaches to: one specific commit, not an abstract "PR" object. GitHub stores its own comments in its own database, but the underlying concept — feedback attached to a specific point in real history — is exactly the same.
A Real, Separate PR Arrives
git fetch origin
git log --oneline master..origin/feature/salad-dressings
A genuinely new branch, pushed by a real teammate — exactly what a "new pull request" notification represents underneath.
Reviewing With the Real Underlying Commands
git diff master...origin/feature/salad-dressings
The exact real content being proposed — the same comparison a PR's "Files changed" tab is a rendering of.
Leaving Real Feedback
git notes add -m "..." origin/feature/salad-dressings
git notes show origin/feature/salad-dressings
git notes attaches real feedback directly to a specific, real commit — the same underlying concept any review comment is built on, regardless of what UI happens to display it.
git notes add
Attaches a real, genuine piece of text directly to a specific commit object, stored in git's own real object database. Confirmed directly in this lab: this is the real, git-native mechanism a review comment fundamentally is — feedback attached to one exact point in real history.
git notes show
Reads back the real note attached to a given commit. Confirmed directly in this lab: retrieving the exact real feedback text left moments earlier, proving it genuinely persisted in the repository itself.
